Pop-Up Choir

WHEN: Monthly.
POP-UP CHOIR! SHOW UP. SING OUT. DO GOOD. Pop-Up Choir is a unique experience of community, musical celebration, and helping others. SHOW UP: As a no-commitment, no-rehearsal choir, Pop-Up Choir is open to all. Truly no musical experience is necessary to join! SING OUT: Nationally recognized performer and teacher Kira Willey leads singers of all skill levels in a joyful, judgment-free atmosphere. The Choir learns a simple and fun arrangement of a contemporary pop or folk song on the spot. By evening’s end, the voices of Pop-Up Choir ring out! DO GOOD: There’s no admission fee to participate; however, attendees are asked to contribute in some way—food donations, or a coat drive, for example—to the event’s chosen social cause. What does a Pop-Up Choir event look like? SHOW UP: Pop-Up Choir is a three-hour event held in regional venues, shops and galleries seeking to build community, support local causes, and increase the profile of their businesses. As people arrive and mingle in the first hour, DJ ARM 18 will provide the soulful soundtrack—spinning jazz, rock, and old school hip-hop with the warm snap, crackle and pop of vinyl. SING OUT: At the start of the second hour, the Choir works with Kira mastering a simple and fun arrangement of a familiar tune. When it’s ready, audio and video of the final performance will be captured—singers are encouraged to record it as well, and contribute to the pool of footage. A video for sharing will be online within a week of the event. DO GOOD: Attendees are asked to contribute to the evening’s chosen cause—this could mean bringing canned goods for a food bank, or a gently used coat for the local shelter. And in the third hour, DJ ARM 18 closes with more killer tunes, as voices carry out the positive vibrations of the event into the world.
